The Director of Elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako, has voiced strong dismay over the Electoral Commission’s prolonged delay in declaring the parliamentary results for the Ablekuma North Constituency, describing the situation as both disappointing and disgraceful.
In an interview with Citi FM on Thursday, 19 June, Mr Nimako questioned why the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to finalise the collation process, several months after the conclusion of the 2024 general election.
“We do not see why it is difficult for the Electoral Commission to complete this exercise. It is not the best. It is a shame that we do not have a Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North,” he lamented.
He further criticised the authorities for their failure to account for the events that disrupted the collation process on 8 December 2024.
On that day, unknown individuals reportedly destroyed sensitive electoral materials, and Mr Nimako expressed frustration over the lack of arrests or investigations.
“What is intriguing is that on the day of collation, on the 8th of December 2024, some men decided to destroy electoral material, yet the police have been unable to arrest and conduct an investigation for these people to be prosecuted, and that for me is a big shame,” he remarked.
In response, the Electoral Commission has explained that the delay stems from a lack of legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department.
The Commission claims it is prepared to proceed but is currently constrained by the refusal of the Ghana Police Service and the National Security Taskforce to provide security without formal legal clearance from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine.
Nonetheless, the EC has reaffirmed its commitment to completing the collation and declaration of results once it receives the necessary security backing.
