Director of Communications for the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to establish a "self-protection committee" in the wake of violent incidents during the Ablekuma North rerun.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, July 12, Mr Aboagye expressed grave concern over what he described as a lack of official response from the presidency, 24 hours after the violent scenes unfolded.
“With what I saw with my own eyes in Ablekuma, and with what I have seen public officials, including Sam George, a cabinet minister, saying – that they are now about to start – I think the NPP has no choice,” he said.
“The NPP has a legal committee, an elections committee, and a communications committee. It is only fair that the party quickly reorganises and establishes a self-protection committee,” he added.
Mr Aboagye’s remarks come amid growing tensions and accusations of politically motivated attacks during the rerun election, which was held in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North constituency.
The rerun was marred by violent disruptions; media watchdogs and election observers have warned of a dangerous trend of rising hostility toward journalists in Ghana’s democratic space.
He criticised the silence from the highest office of the land, noting, “We are yet to hear from our presidency. We are yet to hear our president put up even a simple tweet.”
