Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority and legal practitioner with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abraham Amaliba, has called for a fundamental shift in the orientation of Ghana’s military, stressing the need for full compliance with democratic principles.
Mr Amaliba condemned the recent assault on a JoyNews journalist and his interviewee by a soldier, describing it as an affront to Ghana’s democratic order.
"You need to ensure that these security agencies comply with the democracy that we have," he said on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday.
Mr Amaliba urged the review of military training curricula to include modules on democracy, human rights, and good governance. According to him, equipping officers with such knowledge is essential to fostering respect for civil liberties and the rule of law.
"We need to look at the curriculum of these state institutions. Do they have subjects such as democracy, good governance, and media law? They are operating in a democratic setting, and you need to train them to be amendable to democratic principles."
He emphasised that, "Moving forward, this should be the end, we need to draw a line."
