The Controller and Accountant-General, Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that government has disbursed GH¢809 million to the contractor working on the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project as of August 4, 2025.
The announcement comes as contractors have returned to the site to resume repairs on the critical road, offering much-needed relief to commuters who have endured weeks of severe traffic congestion.
This development also coincides with the nearing deadline of a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which was set to expire on Wednesday, 20th August.
The Union had previously warned of a potential suspension of services if the government did not ensure the contractor resumed work on the highway.
In an interview with Peace FM on Monday, 18th August, Mr Agyei clarified that the government had fully met its financial obligations for the project.
“We made partial payments on 24th July, followed by another on 30th July, and the final payment was made on 4th August. In total, we have honoured the full amount of GH¢809 million as requested,” he explained.
