National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has dismissed claims that the government is scheming to remove suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 26, Mr Asiedu Nketiah insisted that the executive has not taken any steps towards her removal and is focused solely on fulfilling its constitutional mandate.
“The executive has done nothing about the removal of the Chief Justice. If anything at all, the executive is undertaking its responsibilities as far as upholding the Constitution is concerned. So, to my mind, the executive has not done anything to try and remove the Chief Justice,” he stated.
His comments come amid growing public debate over perceived tensions between the judiciary and other arms of government, with critics suggesting political interference in judicial affairs.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah dismissed such allegations, maintaining that the judiciary is not under attack but rather undergoing necessary reforms.
“The judiciary is not under attack. There is a reform of state institutions,” he said. “So if there is a problem with the judiciary, the judiciary has to be reformed to undertake its constitutional duties.”
He stressed that reforms across all state institutions are essential to strengthen Ghana’s democratic framework, emphasizing that such reforms should be viewed as a process of renewal rather than a threat to independence.
The NDC Chairman made these remarks on Channel One TV on Tuesday.
