Former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr Justice Yamson, has said the outcome of the 2024 general election was a resounding vote of no confidence in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) rather than a rejection of its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking in Accra, Dr Yamson explained that the scale of the NPP’s defeat reflected deep public dissatisfaction with the party’s overall governance record after eight years in power.
He argued that the election results should be interpreted as a verdict on the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo rather than a personal failure of Dr Bawumia.
“The 2024 election was clearly a vote of no confidence in the NPP, not necessarily in Dr Bawumia,” Dr Yamson said.
“Ghanaians were responding to the hardship, corruption and governance failures they had endured under the NPP government.”
He urged political actors and analysts to place the outcome in proper context, noting that any fair assessment of Dr Bawumia’s candidacy must consider the difficult legacy he inherited as flagbearer of a party facing widespread public discontent
