Legal practitioner and host of JoyNews’ Newsfile, Samson Lardy Anyenini, has raised concerns about what he describes as the politics surrounding the enforcement of Ghana’s criminal laws on offensive conduct and false publication.
Delivering his editorial segment, Samson’s Take, titled “The Abronye 207 and 208” on Saturday’s edition of Newsfile, Mr Anyenini said while there is nothing inherently wrong with the laws themselves, the problem lies in how they are applied and the criminal sanctions they carry, including custodial sentences for speech-related offenses.
He stressed that Ghana’s Constitution protects free expression and that journalists and civil society advocates have long championed the view that speech, no matter how offensive, should not attract criminal penalties.
