The Focus on Sickle Cell Foundation (FoSCel) has joined global and national efforts in marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, expressing solidarity with women, families, and survivors affected by the disease, while also drawing attention to the often-overlooked burden of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) in Ghana.
In a statement released issued on October 16, the Foundation commended the work of government agencies, private sector partners, and the media in championing early detection, education, and support for breast cancer patients.
“We commend the tremendous national effort by government agencies, corporate Ghana, and the media in promoting early screening, education, and support for breast cancer patients,” the Foundation said. “These efforts are saving lives and inspiring hope across the nation.”

However, while celebrating these achievements, FoSCel took the opportunity to remind the public of another critical health condition that continues to affect thousands of families across the country Sickle Cell Disease.
“Every year, an estimated 15,000 babies in Ghana are born with Sickle Cell Disease, yet awareness and support for affected families remain low,” the statement noted.
FoSCel called for a more inclusive approach to health awareness in Ghana, advocating for equal attention to be given to all serious health conditions, not just those currently in the spotlight.
“We therefore call for sustained collaboration and awareness across all health conditions from cancer to sickle cell because every life matters,” the Foundation stated.
The organisation reiterated its commitment to public education, genotype testing, and fostering national empathy for individuals and families living with SCD.
It said these form a crucial part of its mission to shift the narrative and reduce the stigma surrounding the condition.
