Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) emerged as the overall champion at the 28th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Cross Country and 2nd Minor Games held at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya.
The event, which ran from October 27 to November 1, 2025, brought together 16 public universities under the theme, “Harnessing the Lesser-Known Sports: The Key to Developing the 21st Century Sportsman.”
KNUST swept gold medals across multiple disciplines, including Chess, Scrabble, and Tug of War, showcasing their strength in both physical and mental sports.
In the 10km Cross Country Mixed Relay, KNUST dominated from start to finish, with the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and the University for Development Studies (UDS) finishing second and third respectively.
The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) won gold in Ampe, while C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) and host institution UESD took silver and bronze respectively.
KNUST also claimed gold in both the men’s and women’s Chess events, followed by the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC), who won silver in their respective divisions. The Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) each picked up bronze.
The Tug of War competition saw KNUST once again claim top honours, with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) finishing second and UDS in third place. In Scrabble, KNUST maintained their dominance, securing gold in both men’s and women’s categories.
UESD and GCTU took silver and bronze in the men’s event, while UCC and GIMPA followed behind KNUST in the women’s division.
The results reinforced KNUST’s reputation as one of Ghana’s leading institutions in university sports, blending academic excellence with athletic prowess.
