Minority Leader and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has declined to comment on the recent ECOWAS Parliament saga, saying some matters are best left for time and party deliberations.
Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, Mr Afenyo-Markin said, “I won’t respond to that matter; let’s talk about something else.”
When asked if he would appear before the Privileges Committee, he added, “It’s not everything that you respond to; you leave it for time. As a member of the NPP, the party will talk about it. Not every issue requires a public statement.”
His comments follow allegations by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga that Afenyo-Markin is in contempt of Parliament and should be referred to the Privileges Committee for disciplinary action.
The allegation stems from Afenyo-Markin’s participation in the ECOWAS Parliament session held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, from September 25 to 28, 2025, despite his removal from Ghana’s official delegation.
In Parliament on Tuesday, Ayariga cited Order 31(O) of the Standing Orders, which defines contempt as any act or omission that affronts the dignity or authority of Parliament or brings its name into disrepute.
He argued that by attending the session after being excluded, the Minority Leader had “clearly affronted the authority of Parliament” and must be held accountable.
