The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a temporary waiver of the one-month waiting period for new members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and for people renewing their membership after more than three months of expiry.
In a notice, the Authority said the waiver will apply throughout November until 14 December 2025 as part of this year’s NHIS Active Month campaign.
Explaining the initiative, the NHIA said, “Newly enrolled NHIS members, and those renewing their NHIS membership after more than three months of expiry, have been waived throughout November until the December 14.”
According to the Authority, this means all eligible people who enrol or renew within the period “will enjoy immediate access to NHIS services, without the usual waiting period.”
The NHIA noted that the move is aimed at improving access to healthcare and boosting active membership on the scheme.
It described the campaign as an effort “to make it easier for everyone to stay active on the Scheme and to ensure that no one is left behind in accessing healthcare.”
The Authority encouraged the public to take full advantage of the waiver by renewing or enrolling through any NHIS district office, the MyNHIS app, or the mobile short code *929#. It also advised members to use the Auto-Renewal option to avoid future lapses in their subscription.
“We urge everyone, especially those whose membership has expired for more than three months, to renew promptly and continue enjoying the benefits of quality, affordable healthcare,” the statement added.
