Ghana has called for the establishment of a global certification regime for gold, similar to the Kimberley Process for diamonds, to prevent smuggled gold from entering legitimate supply chains.
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, made the appeal while addressing industry leaders at the 2025 Dubai Precious Metals Conference.
“The time has come for a multilateral and international certification scheme for gold imports and exports," Mr Gyamfi declared, stressing the urgency of coordinated global action.
He explained that such a system would bolster anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing efforts worldwide.
“Gold is a resource for global stability and transformation—it must never become a haven for criminal networks,” he added.
The GoldBod CEO also highlighted Ghana’s readiness to collaborate with international partners, including the UAE, OECD, LBMA, and the World Gold Council.
“We must work together to ensure responsible sourcing,” he said, emphasising that global cooperation is key to the initiative’s success.
Mr Gyamfi concluded by underscoring the moral and economic imperative of the plan. *“With a robust certification system, we can safeguard the integrity of the gold supply chain and ensure that this precious resource contributes to sustainable development worldwide,”* he said.
