Tensions are escalating in Kwabeng, the capital of the Atiwa District in the Eastern Region, as angry youth hit the streets to protest the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining (galamsey).
The protesters accuse their chief of failing to act while their lands, water sources and livelihoods deteriorate.
A youth leader, Addo Dankwa Jnr., told Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem that the community is “not at peace and are not happy,” stressing that numerous petitions to the palace have been ignored.
“We lack development, and the galamsey activities are excessive. Soon, we may have nowhere to bury our loved ones because all our lands are being destroyed,” he lamented.
He warned that frustration is building among the youth and could lead to unrest if no immediate intervention is made.
According to him, the youth are calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to intervene, stop an upcoming gathering planned by the chief, and ensure their grievances are addressed.
The protest comes at a time when galamsey’s impact on water bodies, farms and community safety continues to spark national outrage.
“The people have repeatedly petitioned the palace for change, but the kingsmen are still not listening. The current situation is troubling, and the chief is not addressing these issues. We urge the IGP to step in, stop the chief from holding gatherings, and ensure our concerns are addressed,” he added.
