Police in Yeji, Pru East District of the Bono East Region, have intercepted a Tata bus allegedly transporting 396 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis.
The interception occurred on Sunday, January 11, after the district police command, acting on sustained surveillance, stopped the bus with registration number GR 3232 L near the Barrier area in front of the Yeji Police Station.
The driver, Seidu Alhassan, and his mate, Issah Osman, were arrested to assist police investigations aimed at identifying the owner of the suspected substances.
A search of the vehicle uncovered sacks of dried leaves believed to be cannabis. The parcels were later counted and confirmed to total 396.
Police indicated that the suspected narcotics were allegedly transported from Bimbilla in the Northern Region, passed through Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, and were destined for further distribution.
Yeji District Police Commander, DSP Ahenkrah, told Adom News that intelligence suggested the vehicle was carrying illegal drugs. However, the driver initially denied knowledge of the cargo until the parcels were offloaded and discovered.
DSP Ahenkrah added that the vehicle has been impounded, while the seized substances are being held as evidence. Arrangements are underway to send the items to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for further examination.
The driver and his mate remain in custody to assist with ongoing investigations. DSP Ahenkrah reaffirmed the Ghana Police Service’s commitment to clamp down on drug trafficking and ensure offenders face the law.
