Residents and businesses in the Tema Metropolis and several parts of Accra are expected to experience a temporary disruption in water supply following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline, Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced.
The interruption will affect the entire Tema Metropolis and large sections of Accra, including Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie and surrounding communities.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, GWL said the burst occurred along a critical transmission line that serves the eastern corridor of Accra, leading to widespread disruption in water distribution.
According to the utility provider, engineers and technical teams were immediately mobilised after the fault was detected and have since been working continuously to repair the damaged pipeline.

“Due to the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repair, the restoration process requires careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency,” the statement said.
GWL assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and restore the normal water supply.
The company has advised essential service providers, particularly schools and hospitals, to contact GWL for assistance during the period of interruption.
“Water supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the repair works,” the statement added, noting that further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
