Host of Good evening Ghana, Paul Adom-Otchere, has cautioned against any attempts within the Minority caucus to remove Alexander Afenyo-Markin as Minority Leader, stressing that loyalty remains a central pillar in political leadership.
His comments come after reports that some Minority MPs are allegedly unhappy with Afenyo-Markin’s leadership and may be seeking to use Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent victory as the party’s presidential flagbearer to settle personal scores.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, he said that the ultimate decision on whether to retain or replace Afenyo-Markin lies with Dr Bawumia, but how that decision is made will be politically significant.
"It's a decision for Dr Bawumia to make. But how he makes that decision will indicate a lot and the reasons that he gives for that. If you have a basis to remove based on loyalty, you should. Because loyalty is everything in politics," he stated.
Mr Adom-Otchere questioned whether Dr Bawumia himself holds a negative view of Afenyo-Markin’s leadership, noting that the flagbearer is known as an intellectual and measured politician.
He further warned that removing Afenyo-Markin could come with political consequences, especially if there is no strong justification for such a decision.
Drawing comparisons, he noted that leadership disputes in opposition parties often do not carry the same dynamics as in government, citing past experiences in Parliament.
“We’ve seen the NDC change Haruna Mohammed and Muntaka, but nothing happened. They won the election,” he said.
Mr Adom-Otchere acknowledged that dissatisfaction with leadership is common in politics, arguing that nearly every leader faces criticism from within.
“Some MPs really complain that they don’t like Afenyo-Markin's leadership. But which leader has men not complained about?” he asked.
