Election Watch Ghana has raised alarm over alleged vote buying in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Ayawaso East constituency primary, describing the incidents as a serious threat to the credibility of the electoral process.
A video circulating on social media reportedly shows candidate Baba Jamal distributing televisions to voters and giving boiled eggs to delegates.
In a media interview, the candidate admitted to giving away the TVs as gifts.
In a statement released on Monday, February 9, 2026, Election Watch Ghana condemned the practice as undermining democratic principles.
The organisation noted that while Section 33 of the Representation of the People Law, 1992, prohibits vote buying in general elections, it does not explicitly address internal party primaries, creating a loophole that could encourage such behaviour.
The group also acknowledged the NDC’s quick response in condemning vote buying, urging the party to follow up with tangible measures.
“Taking disciplinary action against those involved would show that the party is serious about protecting the integrity of its electoral processes,” the statement added.
