The United Nation's SDG 6 aims to ensure sustainable water management and universal, affordable access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for all by 2030.
It extends beyond basic access to include improving water quality, reducing pollution amongst others. It is in line towards achieving this that the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has officially handed over a 40, 000 - litre capacity Small - Town Water Supply System to the Mehuntem community on February 12 , 2026.
The project which formed part of the Foundation's commitment to enhancing access to clean and safe drinking water in its host communities, and was aimed at addressing the long standing water challenges faced by the people of Mehuntem.
Speaking during the commissioning , the executive secretary of the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation , Abdel Razak Yakubu revealed that as the time line of handing over the Damang mines over to government draws close , Gold Fields Ghana will continue to be present and assist its host communities;

" .. Gold Field Ghana will continue to be present within its host communities till it hands over the mine to government, we will not halt our development for our host communities because we are handing over the mines in April 2026 , the more reason we have invested USD 38, 822.30 ( 365, 000 gh) to provide a 40, 000 litre capacity water system for Mehuntem , " revealed the Foundation's Executive Secretary.
The facility consists of a concrete pedestal and the provision of a 40, 000 litre storage tank to serve the community; "..individuals can connect the water to their various homes . The assembly has assisted with the provision of chlorine to treat the water and it is very heartwarming that Gold Fields has been able to provide water supply systems for all its host communities it operate in , " Abdel Razak Yakubu reiterated.
The project was implemented in collaboration with the Prestea / Huni-Valley Municipal Assembly ( PHMA) and the Water and Sanitation ( WATSAN) Committee of Mehuntem in a bid to ensure sustainability and community ownership.
