The Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Prof Benjamin Campion, has revealed new measures being implemented to protect fishermen following an armed attack off the coast on Wednesday, February 25, near Senya Beraku.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM's Top Story on Thursday, February 26, he announced that plans are far advanced to introduce an insurance scheme for fishermen to cushion them against losses resulting from sea robberies and other risks.
“The other thing we are working on is to provide a form of insurance. Very soon, all fishermen will have insurance,” he disclosed.
According to him, fishing is a business that must be properly insured to provide relief in times of distress. “If you insure the business, then when some of these attacks happen, they will have some form of relief,” he explained.
Mr Campion also disclosed that the Ghana Navy will roll out a special training package for fishermen as part of enhanced maritime security measures.
"The Navy will be offering training to fishers on how to fish, where to fish, and how to watch out for criminals,” he said.
He added that fishermen, who often know one another at sea, can play a crucial role in identifying suspicious individuals and reporting potential threats early.
