Chairperson of the Women's Caucus in Parliament and Ada MP, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, has revealed plans to put in a motion aimed at increasing the number of women in Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on Joy News' The Pulse on Thursday, she stated that the women's caucus has scheduled consultations with key stakeholders to ensure broad support.
She explained that the initiative is designed to strengthen female representation from 41 out of the 276 members to 60, while addressing concerns from male MPs about political opportunities.
“We are going to move a motion with the aim of increasing women's representation in Parliament, but we will do a further consultation," she hinted.
The Ada MP emphasised that the consultations will involve careful engagement with MPs across constituencies to ensure that the motion is widely accepted and does not create tension between male and female lawmakers.
She explained that the strategy is designed to motivate men to actively support the motion. In constituencies with a female MP, there should be at least three or four opportunities for men to benefit as well.
“If implemented properly, this approach will encourage wider support, as people will recognise the benefits available to everyone. Opportunities surrounding each female MP will inspire men to back the initiative,” she said.
“When men see that women’s progress in governance also brings advantages for them, they will actively support the motion and champion it,” she added.
The Women’s Caucus is expected to play a leading role in coordinating the consultations and pushing the motion once stakeholder engagements are complete.
