Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, has revealed that some companies awarded sole-sourced contracts under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme were only recently established.
Mr Braimah disclosed JoyNews Newsfile on Saturday, 28 March.
Highlighting concerns over procurement practices, he said, “One of the firms awarded sole-sourced contracts in Big Push was created in January 2025,” noting that such awards raise questions about transparency and adherence to competitive bidding principles.
He explained that the Fourth Estate, a media group tracking public procurement, had to appeal initial denials under the Right to Information Act to access details from the Ministry of Roads and Highways. The organisation also wrote to other agencies, including the Ghana Highways Authority, to verify contract records.
Mr Braimah reiterated calls for stronger oversight and stricter enforcement of procurement laws, stressing that awarding contracts to newly formed entities could undermine value for money and public confidence in government projects.
