The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has thrown its full support behind President John Dramani Mahama’s declaration of National General Cleaning Days, describing the initiative as a timely intervention to promote environmental responsibility and safeguard public health following the recent floods that affected several parts of the country.

In a statement on July 9 signed by its General Secretary, Rev. Dr. Cyril G.K. Fayose, the Council commended the government's decision to institute the nationwide exercise, describing it as an important step towards addressing sanitation challenges and preventing disease outbreaks in communities affected by flooding.

The endorsement comes after President Mahama designated July 10 and 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days under the theme "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods".

The exercise forms part of the government's post-flood recovery strategy and is being coordinated by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, with ministers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), heads of public institutions and other state officials directed to lead clean-up activities in their respective communities.

The Christian Council said the initiative presents an opportunity to rekindle civic responsibility and encourage citizens to take ownership of the environment.

"The Council further believes that this initiative provides an opportunity to strengthen civic responsibility, volunteerism, patriotism, and active citizenship. Every Ghanaian has a role to play in protecting our communities and preserving God's creation. Through sustained volunteer action, community participation, and positive behavioural change, together we can build cleaner, healthier, safer, and more resilient communities across the country."

The Council noted that its support for the national exercise aligns with its recently launched Environmental Care and Cleanliness (ECC) Programme, which seeks to encourage churches and communities to adopt sustainable environmental practices.

According to the statement, the ECC Programme, launched under the theme "A Clean Environment – Our Responsibility!", will be intensified through a series of community-based interventions across the country. These include door-to-door public education campaigns, church mobilisation, community clean-up exercises, environmental awareness programmes, youth volunteer initiatives and the strategic use of social media to encourage behavioural change.

The Council said it intends to leverage the extensive reach of churches nationwide to promote a lasting culture of environmental cleanliness beyond the two-day national exercise.

It also appealed to corporate organisations, philanthropic institutions, development partners, faith-based organisations, civil society organisations, educational institutions and individuals to collaborate with the Council in implementing the ECC Programme over the three-year period from May 2026 to May 2028.

According to the Council, such partnerships will help expand environmental education, volunteer mobilisation, community sanitation interventions, youth engagement and environmental advocacy, all aimed at contributing to sustainable national development.

The Council further urged Ghanaians to use the clean-up campaign as a catalyst for sustained action rather than a one-off event.

"The Council calls on all Ghanaians to seize this opportunity to renew our collective commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. Let every church become a centre for environmental education, every Christian a faithful steward of God's creation, every community a model of cleanliness, and every citizen an active participant in building a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Ghana."

The Christian Council expressed optimism that sustained collaboration among government, religious organisations, communities and development partners would help entrench environmental cleanliness as a shared national responsibility while strengthening resilience against future environmental disasters.
