The Electoral Commission has fixed Tuesday, August 18, 2009 to re-run the disputed parliamentary elections in six polling stations of the Akwatia Constituency of the Eastern Region. The EC was last week cleared by the Supreme Court to go ahead and organise the poll in only the six centres after the National Democratic Congress candidate, Baba Jamal, and two independent candidates demanded a re-run of the entire constituency poll. The EC did not agree, insisting it is only six centres that were vandalised during elections on December 7. The six polling stations penciled for the bye-election are Presby JSS Akwatia, Yuroba Mosque Akwatia A, Yuroba Mosque Akwatia B,Lorry Station Akwatia A, Lorry Station Akwatia B, AME Zion Church Akwatia. The New Patriotic Party's Dr Kofi Asare and Babal Jamal are thought to be the front liners. See story on Supreme Court ruling.
