The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is prepared to remark Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) scripts where genuine concerns are raised but will not allow private school associations to scrutinise candidates' scripts independently.

The response follows calls from the Ghana National Council of Private Schools (GNACOPS) for an audit of BECE scripts, citing concerns that some results do not accurately reflect candidates' performance.

WAEC maintained that its marking system is designed to ensure fairness and does not permit the release of examination scripts to schools or associations for independent assessment.

Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, August 6, WAEC's Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said candidates who believe their results do not reflect their performance can apply for remarking through the Council's established procedures.

"That best candidate may not necessarily be the best elsewhere. There is somebody somewhere who may be better than your best candidate. And so, we treat them as individual candidates, and if there is a need for them to take a second look at their results, why not? We are ready to do that," he said.

Mr Kapi explained that any approved request would be handled by WAEC's Chief Examiner and not by external bodies. He added that requests must come from individual schools rather than associations.

"It is not the case that we can give out the script to the schools to mark them... If they come properly, it is something that you may allow for remarking, but not an audit where they would scrutinise the scripts themselves," he said.
