Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc,Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON,  has been honoured with the Zik Pan-African Award for Transformational Leadership in Banking and Financial Innovation.

The award was presented at the 7th Zik International Peace and Leadership Award Lecture in Accra, where the Zik Lecture was delivered by legal practitioner and the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Hon. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor.

The recognition celebrates her nearly three decades of banking experience, more than 20 years of executive management experience at Zenith Bank, and her contribution to the transformation and growth of the financial services industry.

Under her leadership, Zenith Bank continues to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading financial institutions, with the bank also deepening its presence in Ghana.

Zenith Bank Ghana currently operates 43 branches across the country, bringing the institution close to the 50-branch mark as it continues to expand its footprint and widen access to banking services.

The growing presence of Zenith Bank in Ghana forms part of the institution’s broader strategy of delivering financial services through a model built around three core pillars: People, Technology and Service.

According to Dr. Umeoji, these three pillars have remained central to Zenith Bank’s identity and growth since the institution was founded in 1990 by Dr. Jim Ovia, CFR.

“He founded Zenith Bank in 1990, on the solid tripod of people, technology and service,” Dr. Umeoji said.

She explained that these pillars have helped to inspire purposeful leadership within the Zenith family while nurturing leaders who continue to champion excellence and drive positive change across industries.

The People pillar focuses on the development of employees and leadership, while Technology has become a key driver of innovation and improved access to financial services. Service, meanwhile, remains fundamental to the bank’s relationship with its customers and communities.

Dr. Umeoji’s leadership credentials are supported by extensive academic, professional and executive experience.

She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of Jos, a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and a First-Class honours degree in Law from Baze University, Abuja.

She also holds a Master of Laws from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Calabar.

Her academic journey culminated in a Doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University in the United States, where her research focused on inspirational leadership and its contribution to leadership and people management.

Dr. Umeoji has further undertaken executive management programmes at some of the world's leading business schools.

She is an alumna of Harvard Business School, where she completed the Advanced Management Program and obtained certificates in Leading Global Businesses and Strategic Management.

She also completed the Global Banking Program at Columbia Business School, Economics for Business at MIT Sloan School of Management and the Strategic Thinking and Management for Competitive Advantage programme at Wharton Business School.

She is a Certified Professional Banker of the Chartered Banker Institute, London, and a fellow of several professional institutions, including the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, the Institute of Credit Administration, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Nigeria, the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria.

Her professional influence extends beyond the boardroom.

Throughout her career, Dr. Umeoji has delivered keynote speeches and lead papers at academic conferences and symposia, contributing to discussions on financial growth, leadership and people management.

She has also participated in high-level bankers' meetings and contributed to strategies aimed at advancing the banking industry and national economic development.

Her passion for developing the next generation of leaders has also seen her deliver motivational speeches and support initiatives aimed at mentoring and empowering young people.

Beyond banking, Dr. Umeoji has distinguished herself through philanthropy and humanitarian service.

She founded the Pink Breath Cancer Care Foundation, which focuses on educating the public, supporting cancer patients and promoting healthcare programmes across Nigeria.

She also established the Adorable Foundation to provide education and support for indigent children, particularly the girl-child.

Her humanitarian efforts have attracted recognition from organisations including the Nigerian Red Cross, while the Sun Newspaper honoured her with the Humanitarian Service Icon Award in 2023.

Dr. Umeoji has also been recognised for her commitment to ethical banking and service. She instituted the Catholic Bankers Association of Nigeria and has been recognised as a Peace Advocate of the United Nations through UNPOLAC.

She is also a Lady of the Order of Knights of St. John International and was conferred with the Papal Knight of the Order of St. Sylvester by His Holiness Pope Francis.

In 2022, the Federal Government of Nigeria honoured her with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for her contribution to nation-building.

At Zenith Bank, her leadership responsibilities extend across the group's operations. She is the Chairperson of Zenith Bank UK and Zenith Nominees Limited and serves as a non-executive director on the board of Zenith Bank Ghana.

Under her stewardship, that footprint now extends well beyond Africa. Zenith Bank has commissioned a branch in Paris and established operations in Manchester, complementing its subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya, and positioning the institution as an African financial group with a growing international presence.

Receiving the Zik Pan-African Award for Transformational Leadership in Banking and Financial Innovation, Dr. Umeoji described the recognition as more than an acknowledgement of her past achievements.

“It is not merely a recognition of past achievements, but a renewed call to greater service,” she said.

She dedicated the honour to the board, management and workforce of Zenith Bank, while specifically commending the directors and staff of Zenith Bank Ghana for their contribution to strengthening the Zenith brand in the country.

She also expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana for creating what she described as an enabling environment for businesses and investments to thrive.

Dr. Umeoji reaffirmed Zenith Bank’s commitment to widening access to financial services, promoting financial inclusion, improving lives and creating lasting value for the people and communities it serves.

For Zenith Bank Ghana, the expansion to 43 branches and its approach towards the 50-branch mark represents more than a growth in physical presence. It reflects an effort to take banking services closer to customers while combining human capital, technology and customer-focused service.
