The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has declared an indefinite strike, effective Monday August 10.

The Association, which comprises non-teaching staff of the university, is protesting allowance disparities and the poor working conditions of its members.

According to Secretary of GAUA, Phanuel Seli Kwadzo Asense, the allowances offered to the highest ranked non-teaching staff are nearly fifty per cent less than those received by the lowest member of the teaching staff.

He indicates the disparity is affecting the welfare of the administrators and the effective delivery of their services on campus.

“If you pick the least teaching staff member the allowance offered them compared to the highest non-teaching staff member, there is a disparity of not less than 50%,” he noted.

The industrial action was declared following an emergency meeting which convened leadership and members of the association to deliberate on the collective decision.

The strike is expected to affect service delivery at various administrative offices of the university as the administrators lay down their tools.

Administrative offices at the IT, accounting, development departments and the university’s hospitals have been shut down in demand for their concerns to be addressed.

According to Mr Asense, negotiations and letters to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and other government stakeholders over their demands in past months have proven futile.

The group says they are not backing down on their demands until resolved.

“If government is a listening one and would have our concerns addressed, we will consider coming back. We are not fighting the university or the teaching staff,” he said.

A team is expected to be deployed to monitor members who defy the industrial action in the coming days.
