The Assin Fosu District Court has remanded a 28-year-old trader, Monica Ampomah, into police custody after she allegedly assaulted her 10-year-old daughter over suspicions that the child was being sexually abused.
Presided over by His Worship Abdul Majid Iliasu, the court ordered the accused to undergo a mental examination to determine her fitness to stand trial.
She is expected to reappear before the court on September 3, 2026.
According to police prosecutor Matilda Osaah Buabeng, the incident occurred in the early hours of July 21, 2026, after Ampomah reportedly became suspicious about a whitish discharge she had noticed in her daughter’s underwear while washing.
The prosecutor told the court that the mother suspected the Class Five pupil was being sexually abused and was concealing information about the alleged abuse.
At about 3:00 a.m., Ampomah allegedly woke the child and demanded that she identify the person responsible. When the girl denied being abused, the situation reportedly escalated into a physical assault.
The prosecution said the accused allegedly beat the child with a cane before using a metal rod to strike her. She allegedly later used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the child’s head, hand and finger.
The injured child was reportedly forced out of the room at about 4:00 a.m. and sought refuge with her school proprietress.
The proprietress subsequently contacted Gilbert Takyi, a nurse at the St Francis Xavier Hospital in Assin Fosu, who took the child to the hospital for medical attention.
The matter was later reported to the Central North Regional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service.
Police issued a medical report form for the child’s examination and treatment, which has since been completed and returned to investigators.
Ampomah was subsequently arrested, cautioned and charged with causing harm.
The court proceedings will continue as authorities await the outcome of the mental examination.
