The First Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah says the seizures of public facilities by some supporters of the party have been influenced by the utterances of some leading members of the party. He said complaints by some leaders of the party that the government is slow create the conditions for supporters of the party to want to take the law into their own hands. According to Afriyie Ankrah, the situation has not been helped by taunts from opponents of the government who he said claim that even though a new government is running the country, they (opponents) are still in charge calling the shots. He said it is such claims that also drive the party youth to want to retaliate for whatever wrong they presume to have suffered. Since coming into office, supporters of the ruling NDC have forcibly taken over public facilities and threatened workers in certain government agencies and department. Institutions such as the National Health Insurance Scheme, the National Youth Employment Programme, some public lorry parks and toilets have all seen one take-over or another. In some cases, the rampaging youth have claimed those they targetted are sabotaging the government. But speaking to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Mr Afriyie Ankrah said the party does not subscribe to the conduct of some of its members. He said the party believes in due process and the rule of law and would not sanction the violation of laid down procedures. Mr Afriyie Ankran, who is also the Deputy Local Government Minister, admonished supporters of the NDC to exercise restraint while the government puts measures in place to address their concerns. He also appealed to leading members of the NDC to exercise maximum circumspection in their public pronouncements so as not to incite the grass-root supporters against the government. “If we keep saying the government is slow we will be creating the conditions for our supporters to engage in such conduct,” he stated.
