If you do it wrong, being healthy can be tiresome and boring (because, seriously, no one wants to slave over tasteless low-sugar brownies when Pret's are so bloody tasty, do they?).
But how do you make being healthy easy, and – more importantly – enjoyable? That's what we asked the healthiest people in the Cosmo office – the women who glow with wellness and never feel sluggish come 4pm (sigh). So, drumroll please...here are their top ten must-do-everyday health tips:
Online beauty editor Bridget never starts the day without hot water and lemon: "It helps flush out toxins from the day before, and kick starts my digestion," she says. And Cosmo Body editor Taylor does a few yoga stretches before breakfast. "It really wakes you up and gets rid of all the sleepy stiffness," she says.
2. Take time to cook
Deputy chief sub Katie tries to prepare most of her own meals, so she knows exactly what goes into them. "Not only do I avoid the hidden salt and sugar that's added to a lot of pre-packaged meals, it also means I can sneak extra veg in my diet without much thought." Toss a handful of spinach into your soup or whack some courgette into your spaghetti Bolognese – you'll be amazed at how quickly you clock up 5-a-day (and then some!).
3. Keep snacks close
"I always keep nuts, seeds and fruit at my desk to help me avoid getting so hungry I end up binging on the endless supply of cakes and cupcakes in the office," says Katie. And Taylor is never without an apple or 9Bar in her bag: "My husband teases me about it and calls me Mary Poppins, but anytime he gets struck by hunger pangs he's the first one reaching into my snack supply."
4. Make time for relaxation
"I try to go swimming most days – even if it's just for 20 minutes," says Features Writer Sophie, but not just for the fitness benefits. "Because I can't listen to music underwater (or text, or check Instagram…) it clears my head and I leave feeling loads calmer."And Taylor uses her commute to chill out: "I force myself to sit and stare out the bus window for at least ten minutes every evening. It always clears my mind after a hectic day."
5. Take a proper lunch break
Research shows leaving your desk at lunch makes you healthier and more productive, and Features Editor Rosie is a big fan of escaping her desk in the middle of the day: "I always go for a half-hour walk at lunchtime – it's a bit of exercise and a vitamin-D hit in one."
6. Find workouts that fit in
If you have to cancel on a girls' night to make it to Zumba, or don't get in after a workout until 10pm because they gym is so far from home, you're never going to exercise. That's why it's essential to find exercise that fits into your life, not the other way around. "I love the 7-minute workout app when I'm stuck for time. You can always spare seven minutes," says Katie.
