President J. E. A. Mills has called for a halt to what he describes as the politics of personal attacks which has assumed dangerous dimension on the country's political front.According to him, political life in the country had been characterised by the trading of invectives by political opponents, stressing that such situations would not yield any fruitful benefit for the people, especially the youth.President Mills who made these remarks when he paid a courtesy call on the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori¬panin II, at Kyebi, pointed out that such brand of politics was sending wrong signals to the youth who needed inspiration and guidance through the showing of good conduct and character by leaders of the various establishments in the country.The courtesy call on the Okyenhene formed part of a three-day tour of President Mills to the Eastern Region during which he also visited Akropong, Mpraeso, Donkorkrom and Koforidua to explain the state of the economy and also ascertain at first hand problems confronting the people in those communities.President Mills, who was accompanied to the Okyenhene's Palace by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, and other high-ranking government officials, expressed regret that some sections of the society had allowed their emotions to cloud their sense of judgement resulting in their use of foul language against their political opponents.He said since the character of the youth would be moulded to a considerable extent by the behaviour of adults in society, especially those in higher positions of responsibility and trust, "we must exercise great caution to ensure that our language and behaviour, both at home and in public, are civil to transform our children into more responsible and productive citizens for the future.The President said differences in views and opinion among the major political parties should not result in their functionaries exchanging vile language in which people's dignity and integrity were rubbished with impunity.Source: Daily Graphic
