For many Ghanaians the heroic victory of the Black Satellites over Brazil in the just ended U20 championship in Egypt has the hand of God clearly written all over it.Indeed the Vice-president John Daramani Mahama in his welcoming speech to the Satellites said in clear unambiguous terms that God is a Ghanaian. And judging from that grueling final, one cannot but agree something supernatural did happen. But for Mary Tornyenyor, a bilingual secretary in Accra, the interior of an amazing pawpaw naturally crafted in a design of a star with its black seeds embedded in it gave true meaning to the widely held opinion that God was on the side of the Satellites. The meaning of the Black Star- hope of Africa, as captured in her pawpaw, and in the middle of the Ghana flag, may have been lost on her, but after Ghana became the first African side to win the U-20 tournament in history, it dawned on her that her pawpaw may have been a good omen for the Satellites.“It was so amazing when I saw it. The Black Star in the middle, the yellow surrounding it only drew my attention to the Ghana flag. I was so happy. But after the Satellites victory and the way it happened made me realize God’s intervention,” she told Myjoyonline.com in an interview.Narrating how she came by the pawpaw, the obviously elated soft spoken secretary, said she bought the fruit on the eve of Ghana’s epic clash with Brazil at Abeka a suburb of Accra. She sliced it that evening and since then has not stopped opening her fridge to catch a glimpse of the wonderful display of nature, which has had quite an honourable impact on her country, however coincidental it may be.Mary’s rare discovery has deepened the spiritual and natural inkling to the miracle of Cairo, and one can only but hope that another pawpaw will supernaturally emerge in South Africa 2010 when the Black Stars participate in her second consecutive world cup.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
