The Sterling Hall of the Coconut Groove Regency Hotel was on Tuesday night filled with the crème de la crème of Ghana’s movie industry for the launch of the GallyGold Awards.
The awards which organisers say is here to stay will be an annual event awarding excellence in the movie industry and this year’s event will feature productions from 2007 to date.
The name GhallyGold is the rebirth of the name Gallywood and experts say the new look and name will seek to project excellence in the industry.
The challenges of quality, standard and the influx of Nigerian movies notwithstanding, industry players say they hope to wake the industry from its slumber to achieve greater heights.
Nominations will be out in February and the Awards ceremony itself will be held on the 5th of March 2009 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Names such as Bob Smith Jr, Harry Laud, Kofi Abbeyquaye, Augustine Abby, Socrate Safo, Ernest Kofi Abbeyquaye and a host of major industry players including journalists graced the launch.
The launch and unveiling of the awards statue was graced by other distinguished individuals who took turns to give pieces of advise to organisers of the event. They included Mr B.M. Imoro, Head of Video Department, the Ministry of Information who also chaired the occasion, Dr Victor Yankah, a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast and Uncle Ebo Whyte, a playwright.
