The cattle dealer who is challenging the eligibility of the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Adamu Dramani to hold that seat has testified in court saying all his actions were based hearsay.Sumaila Bielbiel, who contends that he has evidence the MP has a Ghanaian and UK citizenship and should therefore be disqualified from holding the seat, Tuesday told the court presided by Justice Charles Quist that he acted on hearsay.According to Joy FM’s Evans Mensah who sat through proceedings, Mr Bielbiel narrated that he met the MP in 1998 in London at an engagement and was told by Mr Dramani that he was a native of Bawku but was then a citizen of the United Kingdom.Since then the cattle dealer said he never met Mr Dramani again until 2008 when he saw him campaigning for the Bawku central seat and decided to report him to the police having heard on radio that any foreigner, by law, is barred from contesting or holding a parliamentary seat.During cross-examination by Egbert Faibille, lawyer for Mr Dramani, Mr Bielbiel said he had never seen the MP holding any British or Burkinabe passport.Asked how he came to the conclusion that Mr Dramani was holding those passports as he had claimed, the plaintiff said he read about the MP holding those passports in the Daily Graphic.Mr Adamu Dramani was disqualified from holding himself as Member of Parliament for Bawku Central on July 15, last year but his lawyers applied for stay of execution.Despite that application, Mr Dramani’s political opponents thought the court’s decision was final and reportedly started preparing for a bye-election.The application for stay of execution was on July 22, 2009, thrown out by the High Court on the grounds that the MP had failed to file his defence despite having been given ample time to do so.The MP eventually won a stay of execution at the Appeals Court after it emerged that a court bailiff deceived it earlier into entering a default judgement against the MP.The case has been adjourned to February 2, 2010.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
