Barring any last minute challenges, public sector workers will from October start receiving their salaries through the bio smart card, E-ZWICH.
The move is part of government’s efforts to move away from transacting business with physical cash.
The Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPPS), which is leading this project is already paying National Service Personnel, student loans and other private firms through the biometric smart card.
Chief Executive of GhIPPS, Archie Hesse, says all the necessary test runs have been concluded for the payment to begin smoothly.
He said the system will be rolled out regionally to ensure that any problems that may arise are dealt with before it takes off countrywide.
In a related development the Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) will today (Wednesday) launch an internet payment gateway to make it possible for holders of domestic Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards to make payment online.
The launch of the ‘gh-link e-Commerce’ is to promote e-commerce and result in the creation of jobs as various services are needed in the e-commerce value chain.
Mr Hesse, urged indigenous Information Technology (IT) players to position themselves to seize the opportunities that the ‘gh-link e-Commerce’ will offer.
