A Quality Assurance Manager of a fuel station in Kumasi was arrested on Tuesday for failing to insure the business premises.
Personnel of the National Insurance Taskforce picked up Prince Awuah of the Harper Road Shell when he could not produce an insurance certificate covering the property.
Officials of other institutions who showed evidence of moves to insure their buildings were made to sign bonds to complete the process.
Many of the institutions had the certificates but had not displayed them, an act described as an offence under the Insurance Act.
The exercise forms part of a three-day initiative to enforce Sections 183 and 184 of the Insurance Act which prescribes private commercial property be insured against fire and collapse.
National Insurance Commission personnel teamed up with police, fire Service and representatives of the Insurance industry to constitute the task force.
Its mandate is to check for insurance certificates of private commercial buildings to guarantee safety of staff and other members of the public.
The taskforce visited 10 private commercial buildings, including Cozy Lodge, Ki-Vis Hotel and Restaurant, Golden Bean Hotel, Sunset Hotel, Sweet Garden and Royal Lamerta Hotel.
Others are Shell Fuel Station Harper road, Stallion Motors, Mordern Auto Services the Dovewell Village.
At the Shell station, managers could not produce an Insurance Certificate for which Quality Assurance Manager, Mr. Awuah ended up at the Ridge Police Station.
“We have it, we have just misplaced it due to ongoing renovation works”, he told the taskforce before he was escorted into a vehicle.
Managers of Stallion Industries, a service station for Hyundai vehicles at Adum, were made to sign a bond to produce the insurance certificate within 24 hours.
The foreign managers expressed anger at the media presence whilst explaining they had to call their mother company in Accra to establish whether they’ve the documents.
Leader of the Taskforce and Head of Marketing, Research and External Relations of NIC tells Luv News the exercise will continue.
“The recent spate of collapses and the major fire outbreaks in premises and commercial properties gives us the need to insure our properties to ensure compliance with the law to protect the public and staff who work in such buildings”, he said.
