Government has issued an ultimatum to canoe fishermen to register their canoes by the end of July.
Those who fail to register will not be allowed to buy premix fuel.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Agric Minister Nii Namasa Namoale, who disclosed this Joy News, added that the directive will give government information about the number of canoes operating in the country and help ensure effective control and monitoring to prevent accidents.
The Mills administration says it inherited the problem of premix fuel smuggling, a situation which has been cited for shortages of the fuel in the fishing communities.
Although government put in place several interventions to forestall the recurrence of the problem, some communities still complain the problem persists.
Nii Mamoale also indicated that canoe fishermen will be denied all other services from the Agriculture Minister if they fail to register their canoes.
The registration exercise has already started in Accra and government hopes to register about 12,000 canoes nationwide.
