LUANDA: Angola's African Nations Cup squad were awarded $150000 by a bank to reward their efforts despite losing to Ghana in the quarterfinals, state media said Tuesday.
The bank presented the money to the Black Antelopes at a branch in the capital, Luanda.
Striker Flavio Amado from the Al-Shabad club in Saudi Arabia received $40000 for scoring three goals in the tournament - two against Mali and one against Malawi.
Manucho Goncalves from Spanish outfit Real Valladolid and Felisberto 'Gilberto' Amaral of Egyptian giants Al-Ahly received $20000 each for their goals.
Midfielder Jose 'Mabina' Alberto and Portugal-based goalkeeper Carlos Fernandes were given $10000 each and other members of the 23-strong squad split $50000.
Accepting the cheques in the absence of coach Manuel Jose, who flew to Portugal following the death of his father, Angola captain Carlos 'Kali' Alonso said: "On the pitch, it's not about the money, but now we're being compensated for our efforts." - Sapa-AFP
