Parliament on Tuesday refused to hear a Deputy Minister for Finance, Fiifi Kwetey, who was there to represent the substantive minister to answer questions on the floor of the House.
This follows protests by Minority Members of Parliament (MPs) that the deputy minister was not qualified to answer questions on policy issues insisting that the question should rather be answered by the substantive minister.
After a heated debate between the two sides on the issue, the Speaker, Mrs. Joyce Bamford Addo ruled that the questions should be answered by the substantive Minister, Kwabena Dufour.
The Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, Rojo Mettle Nunoo, was however permitted by the Minority to answer his questions, but the Majority side stepped his questions down arguing that he cannot also answer questions if Fiifi Kwetey was not permitted.
“Madam Speaker, the Deputy Majority Leader made an application for this House to indulge the Deputy Minister for Roads in response [to] the questions listed from 203 up to up to 209,” was a comment the Minority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu made to register the Minority’s approval for the Deputy Roads and Highways Minister to address the House.
Meanwhile, outgoing Sports Minister Rashid Pelpuo has asked the Member of Parliament for Evalue-Gwira, Catherine Afeku, to apologize to women for alleging that women sent to Angola to cheer the Black Stars were used to satisfy the sexual cravings of the men.
Catherine Afeku in a contribution on the performance of the Black Stars on the floor of Parliament Tuesday alleged that some of the women among the over 400-member government delegation sent to Angola for the final encounter between Ghana and Egypt were picked for sexual pleasure.
But after a probe by the Speaker of Parliament, she withdrew the comment saying she had no proof.
