The Lower Manya Krobo District Assembly is on a war of attrition with the Member of Parliament for the area Michael Tei Nyaunu. The MP is alleging that the assembly is indebted to the tune of GH¢20 million and accuses the former District Chief Executive and presiding member of misappropriation of funds.According to Michael Teye Nyaunu the assembly paid contractors huge sums of money for little work done. This has provoked some members of the Assembly who claim the allegations are untrue and borne out of the MP’s obsession to have ex-government officials prosecuted.A member of the local assembly David Walter Hormenu told Joy News the allegations are false and unacceptable. He maintained the assembly’s accounts have not been audited and wondered the source of the allegations being peddled by the MP.Hormenu however conceded that the Assembly is in debt of some GH¢9 million but that he insisted does not warrant calls for the prosecution of the ex-officials.“It is true the Assembly is in debt but that does not warrant the prosecution of those two gentlemen you have spoken about. I am a staunch NDC member but I will not sit down for something which is untrue and unfair to be peddled over somebody’s integrity.“That one I think is unacceptable,” he insisted. He intimated the debts were accrued through the execution of legitimate projects undertaken by the assembly.Michael Hormenu maintained the accusation was an indictment on the Assembly members and would not be countenanced. He warned that the MP will be hauled before the Assembly to substantiate his allegations. When Joy News’ Evans Mensah spoke to the MP, he insisted the allegations were true and incontrovertible. He challenged the locus of Hormenu, saying he has no mandate to speak on behalf of the assembly. According to him, Hormenu contested the position of the presiding member but failed on three occasions. He referred to comments that his allegations were politically motivated as suffering from “juvenile delinquency and an infantile disorder”.
