The mortal remains of Madam Hawa Yakubu, former Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, were on Saturday laid to rest at her home at Pusiga near Bawku.
Final funeral rites, attended by a heavy crowd, including the Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama who led a government delegation and Prof, J.E.A. Mills, who also led an NDC delegation, preceded the burial.
So heavy were the mourners trying to catch a glimpse of the final moments of the late ‘Iron Lady’s’ burial that police had to cut short a filing past to save time.
Joy News correspondents at the funeral said the late Hawa was buried next to her late mother, and only a few, close family relatives were allowed to witness the interment.
Among Alhaji Aliu Mahama’s entourage were NPP Chairman, Peter Mac-Manu, Defence Minister Kwame Ado-Kufuor, Employment Minister Boniface Saddique and former ministers Yaw Osafo Maafo and Nkrabea Effah Darteh.
With Professor Mills were parliamentarians Haruna Iddrisu, Mahama Ayariga, Innusah Fuseini and a host of others.
There were delegations from neighbouring countries and also from the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The many tributes acknowledged her as a fearless woman, politician and mother with a lot of compassion, and as one who kept her word and lived for others.
On Friday evening when the body of the late Hawa arrived at Bawku en-route to her hometown, activities in the Bawku township virtually came to a standstill.
Both old and young onlookers gathered along the principal street right from the southern outskirts of the town to Sabon Geri, at the northern edge of Bawku and wailed uncontrollably.
