Educationist Aaron Osafo Acquah has criticized the position of the Deputy Education Minister that the government is not alarmed over the high number of teachers leaving the classroom.
A latest study commissioned by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union, suggests that about 10,000 teachers leave the classroom every year.
According to Dr. James Annang, the government is not alarmed at the statistics because more teachers are being churned out to replace those who leave.
But an educationist at the University of Cape Coast, Aaron Osafo Acquah disagrees. He said the minister’s explanation that the high attrition problem is not unique to the teaching profession is misplaced.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ahafo Ano South, Stephen Balado Manu, who is also a trained teacher, believes the government must do more to retain professional teachers.
