The People’s National Convention (PNC) is calling for the immediate cancellation of the one laptop per child programme. General Secretary of the party, Bernard Monah explains that the policy is unrealistic because most of the rural areas where the policy will be implemented lack electricity. He expects president John Evans Atta Mills to announce the termination of the programme in his second state of the nation’s address to parliament on Thursday. Monah said government must discontinue programmes which do not reflect the aspirations of the people, adding he expects a sessional address that will restore hope in the Ghanaian. He said the economic situation of the Ghanaian has not improved and wants the sessional address to among other things concentrate on providing jobs for the teeming unemployed youth. On the part of the New Patriotic Party, it expects government to revise its expenditure and spend “wisely” in productive ventures in the year 2010. Head of Communications of the party Kweku Kwarteng believes the Mills led administration spent the better part of its first year investing in the wrong areas of the economy and hopes government will consult more in the years to come. He also accused government of reducing expenditure in salary adding that was at variance with the party’s campaign. The CPP’s Ivor Greenstreet said the party was looking for specific government intervention that will boost small businesses and to put money into people’s pocket. He wants the government to look inward and give the Ghanaian entrepreneur the opportunity to expand. John Mills’s state of the nation’s address will be his second since assuming office last year.
