Mr Francis Kojo Arthur, Member of Parliament for Gomoa West, has called on Ghanaians to reflect on the past and determine whether their performance was in consonance with the vision of the founding fathers of the nation. He cautioned Ghanaian against corruption, environmental degradation, drug abuse, misuse of state property, "get rich quick" attitude, cyber fraud, armed robbery, and other social vices affecting national development. Mr. Arthur, who was addressing a parade of school children to mark Ghana's 53rd independence anniversary at Apam on Saturday, noted that patriotism of the founding fathers that lead to Ghana's independence from British colonial rule, should inspire the people to contribute meaningfully to national development. He expressed concern about low standards of education in the district, citing that 740 students out of 2,255 students, who took part in the 2009 Basic Education Certificate Examination, gained admission into second cycle and eight schools scored zero per cent whilst six other educational institutions had one candidate each passing the examination. Mr. Arthur reminded the students that education formed the foundation for their development and they should take their studies seriously to enable them acquire skills and knowledge required for national development. He asked them to take advantage of the Community Information Centre and other computer facilities established by the District Assembly and acquire knowledge in Information and Communication Technology. Mr. Arthur said government was committed to boosting the agriculture sector to ensure food security in the country. He said distribution of premix fuel to fishermen had improved and pair-trawling had been banned and a Buffer Stock Management Agency established to ensure the stabilization of prices of agriculture produce. Mr. Arthur said the Agency was rehabilitating some warehouses of the erstwhile Ghana Food Distribution Corporation throughout the country to enhance food storage.
