The relatives of two-year old male twins, who are facing serious health problems after drinking soda, have appealed to the government, non-governmental organisations and well-to-do individuals to assist the twins financially to access medical care for them. The twins, Emmanuel and Godfried Opoku Nyarko, were said to have mistaken soda for water and drank it at Akyem Asene, near Oda, in the Eastern Region, resulting in their present predicament. The grandfather of the children, Mr Daniel Ntikurah, who made the appeal through the Daily Graphic at Asene, said on March 6, last year, after watching the Independence anniversary parade at the Asene Methodist School Park with their mother, they returned home and went out to play. He said while moving around, the twins came across a container full of soda water in a nearby house which was being used by the landlady to prepare locally manufactured soap. Mr Ntikurah said the children innocently drank the liquid, which immediately burnt their throats, making it impossible for them to eat and drink. He said the twins were thus rushed to the Oda Government Hospital, which gave them a first aid and subsequently referred them to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for a specialist attention. Mr Ntikurah stated that by God's intervention, the specialist doctors at the Korle-Bu Hospital performed surgical operations in their tummies and inserted tubes, through which food is passed to ensure their survival. He said the doctors said GH¢3,000 would be required for further surgical operations in the children’s throats, so that they could swallow food. Mr Ntikurah said the family had spent a lot of money on the children's health, and had exhausted all their resources. He, therefore, appealed to the government, philanthropic organisations, benevolent societies, churches and well-to-do individuals to help in saving the lives of the children. Source: Daily Graphic
