A Deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has blamed the unyielding agitation within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the conduct of some leaders in the party.He told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah that immediately the party came to power in January 2009, some of its leaders virtually incited the grassroots supporters of the NDC, by leading them to believe that they were being deliberately undermined.“Right when we won power January 7, even in less than a month, you had some leaders going round inciting this view that ‘oh power has come, what have you got?, what have you received?’ and all of that. Our politics is portrayed by some people as a wartime conquest where you have spoils to share, you know, it is as if when you win power the Bank of Ghana vaults are opened for you and there is cash to distribute to your supporters,” he said.Mr Ablakwa contended that the situation where supporters of the party “are told that ‘you haven’t got anything so far’ and ‘they’ve abandoned you’, ‘they are in their offices and don’t care about you’ creates a certain mentality of entitlement [in the minds of the youth]”.According to him, some political leaders in the party “who should know better,” must change their language and conduct, and desist from inciting people to arrogate to themselves the power to take over state institutions and call for the dismissal of government appointees.“The youth in Yendi for example should know that they don’t have the power to fire their MCE, at best if [they] have an issue [they] can petition the Regional Minister or the president, the appointing authority. How on earth can you think as a young person that you have the power to disappoint or to kill an MCE if you don’t like him, it is absolutely absurd, to say the least,” he charged.The Deputy Information Minister said some political nemesis within the ruling party, were creating problems for the president’s appointees in various parts of the country.He expressed the government’s disappointment at the suggestion by the police in Yendi that they are unable to arrest people issuing death threats on the MCE there.He said the police had no justification to be afraid of enforcing the law simply because the perpetrators of a crime are doing it in the name of politics.The Yendi District Police Command Tuesday said they could not arrest any of the youth threatening to kill the Yendi Metropolitan Chief Executive there because the issue was more political than criminal and that no formal complaint had been lodged with the police.But the Deputy Minister disagrees.Mr Ablakwa said the conduct of the youth amounted to a clear violation of provisions of the criminal code and the police must act in accordance with the law.Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
