A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Nyaho Tamakloe, has appealed to former president John Agyekum Kufuor to solve problems that are plaguing the party. According to him, the ex-president holds the key to resolving the party’s problems and bring peace and unity to the party, if only he is willing. He was speaking on Asempa FM’s “Ekosii Sen” programme Thursday, when he called into the show to react to submissions made by Pollster Ben Ephson concerning some decisions the leadership of the NPP had taken in connection with the party’s up-coming Congress on July 3. Mr Ephson was of the view that the party’s decision to have an early congress was going to favour a particular person in the contest as against the others. But Dr Tamakloe, who was irritated by this suggestion, wondered what role the pollster played in the affairs of the party. He asked whether Mr Ephson has any right to scrutinize decisions made by the highest administrative body of the party [the National Executive] on radio, accusing the pollster of being biased towards the NPP. Dr Tamakloe noted that “the youth of this country are crying and their only hope [for a better future] is the NPP,” hence, if Mr Kufuor fails to solve the party’s problems for it to re-capture power in 2012, he would not be forgiven. Some members of the party who have made known their intentions to contest the flag-bearership position also expressed similar concerns about the issue of ‘early congress’ on the same programme. Prof. Frimpong Boateng, one of the candidates, said the decision would deepen the perception that some people are being favoured; adding that there was a possibility of some people going to court to challenge the party’s National Executive. On his part, Mr Isaac Osei, MP and another contestant agreed with Prof Boateng, saying that it would have been better if the executives had sought the concerns of all the contestants.
