The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is warning it will not hesitate to disqualify any of its flag bearer aspirants if they engage in any form of smear campaign in the lead-up to the party’s congress.
The party says it has noticed with grave concern damaging allegations circulating in the media, targeted at perceived front runners in the campaign to become presidential candidate of the party.
Both key contenders, Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyerematen, have been targeted.
The latest allegation strongly denied by the Akufo-Addo camp is the accusation that the camp had submitted documents to the current Attorney General that may lead to the prosecution of Alan Kyerematen.
There are also several damaging text messages targeting certain leading individuals in the various campaign teams.
General Secretary of the NPP, Kwaku Owusu Afriyie, says the party will not tolerate any form of dirty campaigning.
The code of conduct of the party stresses that “candidates comport themselves with decorum on all occasions. They should refrain from all acts which may bring the good name of the party and its reputation, for respect of constitutional order and rule, into dispute,” Mr Owusu Afriyie said.
According to him, any breech of the guidelines constitutes misconduct under the party’s constitution and will be punished, warning of possible disqualification from the party.
