A campaign to protect young people from political manipulation is set to roll out with the backing of the Christian group, Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).
The campaign, dubbed “Subject to Citizen,” aims at empowering the youth with vocational and technical skills so they are employable.
Peace ambassador and musician Henry Agyekum, popularly known as Chemfe, is also onboard to sensitize the youth on their rights and responsibilities.
President of YMCA, Harold Obeng Yeboah, said: “Young people in Ghana are voiceless, invisible and are seen to have been relegated to the background like people who do not matter or count. There has been no opportunity or meaningful space for them to be involved in the political and economic spheres and as such they easily fall prey to bandit politicians and armed groups alike.”
Citing statistical data, Mr Yeboah said “The African youth’s level of civic engagement and competence is unacceptably low. They have been reduced and confined if not branded as subjects rather than citizens.”
On his part musician Chemfe said he was motivated to be on the programme because of the unruly behaviour exhibited by the youth in recent times.
The latest trend has been the seizure of public buildings by youth who blame their leaders for failing to replace certain individuals belonging to other political parties.
