The Head of Monitoring and Evaluation Unit at the Presidency Dr Tony Aidoo has descended vehemently on the 2008 Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana Akufo-Addo, over his castigation of the Mills administration.
Dr Tony Aidoo in an interview with Shamima Muslim on Citi Eye Witness News on Wednesday, described the One-time Attorney General and Presidential Candidate of the NPP as a ‘‘Champion of Corruption’’.
Dr Aidoo's comments follow a litany of allegations and name-calling by Nana Addo against the incumbent administration as he launched his bid to vie for the NPP’s presidential primaries, ahead of the 2012 general elections.
Key among the issues, Nana Addo said the NDC Government was seriously engaged in politics of witch-hunting at the neglect of the country's developmental agenda.
He also stated that as a result of the economic policies adopted by President Mills and his government, the World Bank is now estimating that half a million more Ghanaians will fall below the poverty line by this year alone.
The 2008 Presidential Candidate of the NPP also admonished President Mills to direct his anger at dealing with the fundamental problem of growing the economy, and stop blaming “hardworking CEPS officials” for revenue declines.
“Bad officials must be dealt with according to law. However, the President should stop blaming hardworking CEPS officials for revenue declines and direct his anger positively at dealing with the fundamental problem of growing the economy.’’
The comment followed the President’s rebuke of personalities within Customs, Excise and Preventive Service for corrupt practices after renowned Investigative Journalist of the New Crusading Guide News Paper Anas Aremeyaw Anas, had exposed CEPS and other security officers taking bribes and assisting in the smuggling of Ghana's cocoa to its western neighbour, Cote D’Ivoire.
But Dr Tony Adu, a Leading Member of the NDC, said he is astonished at this comment by Nana Addo.
He told Citi FM that he does not understand why a man of pedigree and sound mind who claims to have fought corruption, will criticize the President for showing commitment to deal with corrupt officials at CEPS based on empirical video evidence.
He said Nana Addo has shown by his comments that indeed he cannot fight corruption because he is so corrupt.
‘‘I thank God Nana Addo has exposed himself to Ghanaians, He is indeed the Champion of corruption.... He stated’’.
