The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has completed the vetting of its five flag-bearer aspirants. The one day exercise was low key compared to the last vetting in 2007 which lasted days owing to the number of aspirants then seeking to lead the party into the 2008 general elections – seventeen. The first to take his turn was Kumasi-based lawyer, Mr Kwame Kodua. A veteran politician, Mr Kodua told journalists after his vetting that the process was normal for him. He said today’s vetting was his third and that he was confident he will go through to contest the elections. Next was former Trade and Industry Minister, Mr Alan Kyerematen, who said the issues raised by members of the vetting committee were pertinent. He said he responded to the issues as candidly as he could. Immediately following Mr Kyerematen was Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng whose campaign launch was nearly marred by controversial comments by Mr Kwame Pianim. After his vetting, he said the process was pretty normal. The 2008 presidential candidate of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo was the fourth aspirant to be vetted and Mr Isaac Osei completed the list. First Vice-Chairman of the NPP, Mr Fred Oware told Joy News’ Evans Mensah all five candidates were well composed during their respective sessions. He said the vetting committee hopes to finish its work by next week and submit its report to the National Executive Council of the party. Mr Oware rejected suggestions the vetting was a mere formality. Story by Malik Abass Daabu/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
